Punjab FC have strengthened their squad ahead of the upcoming AIFF Super Cup 2025 by roping in Bosnia and Herzegovina international Samir Zeljkovic as their first overseas signing of the season. The 28-year-old joins the club on a free transfer, signing a one-year deal after completing a stint with Serbian side Radnički 1923, where he featured in the 2025–26 UEFA Conference League qualifiers.

Zeljkovic, who can operate both as a central defender and defensive midfielder, brings with him valuable experience from European football. A product of FK Sarajevo’s youth academy, he spent six formative years there before making his senior debut with Igman Konjic in Bosnia’s second division during the 2017–18 season. The following year, he made the jump to Velež Mostar, one of Bosnia’s most prominent clubs, where he clocked 149 appearances across five seasons.

In 2023, Zeljkovic returned to FK Sarajevo and was later loaned out to Uzbekistan Super League side Bunyodkor. His consistent performances also earned him a place in the Bosnia and Herzegovina probable squad for the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League fixtures against Italy and the Netherlands, as well as a friendly against Iran.

Punjab FC Technical Director Nikolaos Topoliatis described the signing as a key addition to the club’s evolving project.

“Our approach to recruitment has always been strategic — identifying players who fit our system and bring strong character and professionalism to the squad. In Samir, we have a player with experience across Europe and Asia. We are confident he will not only elevate the team’s performance level but also inspire our younger players,” said Topoliatis.

Expressing his excitement, Zeljkovic said he is eager to embrace the new challenge.

“I’m excited to wear the Punjab FC colours and start this new adventure. It’s always special to join a club that’s building something meaningful. I’ve heard great things about Punjab FC’s vision for developing football in India, and I want to be part of that story. I know Indian football is growing fast, and this move felt like the right step for me — both as a player and a person,” he said.

Zeljkovic’s arrival marks the start of Punjab FC’s overseas recruitment drive as they prepare for the AIFF Super Cup 2025, set to kick off in Goa on October 25.
