Australia batter Matt Renshaw revealed that Virat Kohli’s dismissal for a duck during his ODI debut in Perth gave him a sense of reassurance, helping him realise that failure is part of the game and there’s no need to put excessive pressure on oneself.
The first ODI in Perth marked Kohli’s return to the format since the Champions Trophy, and also Renshaw’s debut. The two players had contrasting outings. Kohli, who has scored more than 14,000 ODI runs, was dismissed for a duck, while Renshaw remained unbeaten on 21 to help his team complete the run chase and take a 1–0 lead in the three-match series.
“Even the other night, I was a bit nervous because I hadn’t batted in one-day cricket for a while,” Renshaw told reporters on the eve of the Adelaide ODI. “Virat Kohli made a duck, and he is the best player in this format. So I thought, ‘It’s okay to fail.’ A lot of the time, you’re always chasing perfection in this game. But no one has ever perfected it. I don’t think there’s any point trying too hard.”
Following the retirements of Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell, there are vacancies in Australia’s middle order. The ongoing series provides a perfect opportunity for Renshaw to cement his place in the side. He has started the series on a positive note and will be looking to make the most of the remaining two ODIs.
