The Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction is likely to be held in the last week of November in New Delhi. There has not been any official communication from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to the franchises, but according to a Cricbuzz report, the teams have been informally informed about the proposed venue in the capital city.

As for as the auction date is concerned, it is yet to be finalised. But according to reports, the auction window is now set for 26th and 27th November.

Earlier reports had suggested that it could take place at any time between 26 and 29 November.

With only five teams in the league and a maximum squad size of 18 players, there is a school of thought that the auction process will move quickly, making it a one-day affair—even if as many as 90 players go under the hammer.

According to the revised retention guidelines, franchises will be allowed to retain up to three capped Indian players, two overseas players, and two uncapped Indians. However, the total number of retained players cannot exceed five. All five teams have been asked to submit their retention lists by November 5.

For the first time in the history of the league, franchises will be able to use the Right to Match (RTM) card. This will allow teams to match the highest bid on a player that they have previously released, in order to reclaim them during the auction. If a team retains five players, it will lose a combined sum of INR 9.25 crore from its auction purse. Furthermore, such a team will not be permitted to use the RTM option.

The BCCI has set the retention prices, starting at INR 3.50 crore for the first player retained and gradually reducing to INR 50 lakh for the fifth.
