South Africa made a remarkable comeback against Pakistan on day three in the second Test in Rawalpindi, thanks to their lower order batters Senuran Muthusamy and Kagiso Rabada.
South Africa were 235 for eight when Muthusamy and Keshav Maharaj came to the crease and they put together a partnership of 71 runs that took South Africa close to Pakistan’s total of 333. Muthusamy completed his fifty in the 97th over when he punched a ball from Shaheen Shah Afridi through cover-point. This was his second fifty in Test cricket.
South Africa lost their ninth wicket in the last ball of the 100th over when Maharaj was stumped off Noman Ali for a well-made 30, when South Africa’s score was 306/9. Then Rabada fought hard with Muthusamy and they stitched a partnership of 98 runs for the last wicket. Rabada attacked the bowlers and played an innings of 71, including four fours and four sixes. Muthusamy was unlucky as he could not complete his hundred and remained unbeaten at 89. His innings included eight fours.
This is the second time in Test cricket when the partnerships for the ninth and tenth wickets exceeded fifty runs. At one time, it was looking like South Africa would concede a huge lead but these two partnerships helped South Africa take a 71-run lead. At the end of the day, Pakistan were 94/4.
