India opener Rohit Sharma played an impressive knock of 73 in the ongoing second ODI in Adelaide after a disappointing outing in Perth. In the first ODI against Australia, he scored just eight runs in what was his first international match since the Champions Trophy Final in March. The former Indian captain played a fighting innings of 73 runs from 97 balls, which included seven boundaries and two maximums, at a strike rate of 75.25 in the second game. Rohit shared an important 118-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer, which helped India fight back after losing two early wickets.
Captain Shubman Gill scored just nine runs, and Virat Kohli scored another duck, his second in the series. Rohit looked set for another big hundred on Australian soil but was bounced out by Mitchell Starc.
With this knock, Rohit has shattered multiple records. He has moved past Sourav Ganguly to become India’s third-highest run scorer in ODIs, surpassing Ganguly’s tally of 11,221 runs. Only Sachin Tendulkar (18,426) and Kohli (14,181) now stand ahead of him. The 38-year-old also becomes the batter with the most runs as an opener in ODIs, going past Ganguly once again.
Another milestone unlocked by Rohit was becoming the first batter to reach 1,000 ODI runs against Australia, achieving this landmark in just 21 innings.
