After Rohit Sharma’s match-winning century against Australia in Sydney, his childhood coach Dinesh Lad revealed that the veteran batter plans to feature in the 2027 World Cup before bringing his legendary career to a close.
Rohit lit up the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) with his blazing 121-run knock to help his team win the game and avoid a series whitewash. It was a chanceless innings by the veteran Indian opener. Although India lost the series, the 38-year-old finished as the highest run-scorer and was named Player of the Series.
“The way Rohit batted today and how he contributed to India’s win — it felt great to watch. He will play in the 2027 ODI World Cup and retire after that,” Dinesh told ANI.
Virat Kohli also played a big part in the win with his unbeaten 74. This came after the former India captain registered two successive ducks. While praising Kohli, Dinesh recalled Sachin Tendulkar’s speech in which he predicted both Rohit and Kohli would shatter multiple records.
“He is someone who can thrive anytime and anywhere. The way he played today felt good. Sachin had said at a function long ago that Rohit and Virat would be the players to break his records. Both getting closer to his records feels really good,” he added.
There has been much speculation about the future of Rohit and Kohli. Both batters did not play any form of competitive cricket before taking part in the three-match series in Australia. At the fag end of their careers, the future of Rohit and Kohli remains uncertain.
