India Women’s team defeated South Africa Women’s team by 52 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai to win the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. This is the first World Cup title for the women’s team.
Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin believes that this win is bigger than any other World Cup victory in the past because it will inspire more girls to take up the sport in the country.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said: “I would rate this as an even bigger and more colossal achievement than any World Cup we have won before, because this has the ability to encourage girls out there to practise the game of cricket and take up the sport seriously as a career option.”
India have now won three ODI World Cups (men’s and women’s teams combined). Kapil Dev and his men won the first trophy in 1983, inspiring many young cricketers, including the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, to take up the sport. After a 28-year wait, MS Dhoni led India to their second title in 2011 on home soil, with Ashwin a part of that team.
Ashwin also believes that this victory will bring a wave of change in Indian society.
“It is going to change the mindset and conditioning of everybody associated with Indian women and Indian women’s cricket,” he added.
