AUS vs IND: Dube credits Gambhir and Morkel for bowling revival

India all-rounder Shivam Dube credited head coach Gautam Gambhir and bowling coach Morne Morkel for helping him improve his bowling skills and instilling confidence.

Dube was one of the architects of India’s win against Australia in Carrara. After failing to live up to expectations with the bat while batting at number three, Dube’s medium-pace bowling came into effect in India’s defence. The right-arm pacer bent his back on a pitch that had a spongy bounce to dismiss Mitchell Marsh and Tim David, two of Australia’s top four batters. Those two wickets proved crucial in the context of the game. Among India’s pace-bowling options, Dube emerged as the most successful, outshining the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh.

“Morne [Morkel], Gauti bhai and Surya came up with a very good plan for me — which track I had to target and what I had to bowl,” Dube said at the press conference after the fourth T20I. “Morne has helped me a lot because there are some small things that have made my bowling better, which weren’t happening before despite trying hard. Gauti bhai backed me a lot for that. Tu bindaas bowling daal [You bowl with a free mind]. We are here for you. You might concede runs, but we want you to express yourself. That was the plan even today, so I did that.”

During the Asia Cup earlier this year, Dube was seen working hard on his bowling during practice sessions. With Hardik Pandya unavailable for the tour, Dube stepped up with the ball in the fourth T20I to help India take a 2–1 lead in the five-match series.
