Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is set to join Durban’s Super Giants (DSG) once again for the upcoming SA20 season. He will replace Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam, who became the first Bangladeshi cricketer to be selected for the South African T20 league.

Williamson’s addition is expected to strengthen the team’s batting line-up as they look to bounce back from a difficult last season. On November 2, he announced his retirement from the T20I format but continues to play T20 cricket around the world.

According to a report by ESPNCricinfo, Taijul was bought by DSG for R500,000 (around USD 28,800) at the mega auction held in September. However, he will not be part of the fourth season of the SA20, which begins in December. Williamson played for DSG last season but was left out ahead of the auction.

In the 2024–25 season, Williamson was DSG’s highest run-scorer, scoring 233 runs in eight matches at an average of 46.60, with a strike rate of 118.87. Despite his strong performances, the team finished at the bottom of the points table.

Williamson has been actively participating in franchise cricket this year. Before being appointed as the strategic advisor for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL next season, he played in The Hundred for the first time and featured in the Vitality Blast in England after seven years, representing Middlesex.

The fourth season of the SA20 will begin on December 26, with Durban’s Super Giants facing MI Cape Town in the opening match.
