The International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Kirsty Coventry believes the return of cricket to the Olympics at the Los Angeles 2028 Games will bring Indian fans closer to the Olympic movement. Cricket will be played in the T20 format, marking a historic moment for the sport and expected to boost the Olympic movement’s popularity in India — a nation deeply passionate about cricket.
Speaking in a recorded message during the CNBC TV18 Global Leadership Summit, Coventry said, “With cricket returning to the Olympic programme at Los Angeles 2028, the connection will only grow stronger, bringing the magic of the Games even closer to the hearts of Indian fans.”
Coventry added that India has, “every reason to look to the future with great confidence,” referring to both the sport’s Olympic comeback and India’s official bid to host the 2036 Olympics, with Ahmedabad proposed as the host city.
She also praised India’s growing participation in the Olympic movement, noting the record number of athletes and rising interest among fans. “India already plays a growing role in this story. We have seen record athlete participation, millions of passionate fans following the Games and tremendous excitement across the country,” Coventry said.
Highlighting the IOC’s commitment to strengthening partnerships, she added, “Our aim is to build on this momentum through partnerships that create shared values — partnerships grounded in integrity, innovation and social impact.” Coventry said such collaborations between sport and business can “open opportunities, foster inclusion and inspire the next generation to dream bigger.”
