Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has praised the in-form wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel, acknowledging his recent performances. Ganguly told the agencies that Sai Sudharsan and Jurel could be competing for the No. 3 slot.
“He’s playing well, isn’t he? Rishabh is back and I don’t know what the selectors are thinking,” he said. “Basically, the spots are taken — two openers, (Shubman) Gill at 4, Pant at 5, KL (Rahul), (Ravindra) Jadeja are there. Players have performed. How easy it will be to open up a slot for Dhruv Jurel at this stage, I wouldn’t know. But it depends on whom they want to send at No. 3 — whether they want to go with Sai Sudharsan, or bring in our in-form Dhruv in. We’ll find out.”
Jurel was seen as India’s second-choice wicketkeeper behind Pant in Test matches until the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy in England. However, his recent red-hot form has made him a strong contender for a batting spot higher up the order.
In the recently-concluded second unofficial Test against South Africa A, Jurel amassed twin hundreds, showcasing remarkable consistency and temperament.
Earlier, in the two-match Test series against the West Indies, when Pant was out of the team because of his injury, Jurel took the responsibility and became India’s fourth-highest run-scorer of the series. He amassed 175 runs at an average of 87.50, including a century in Ahmedabad.
