England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick has backed Joe Root to use his current run of form to end his century drought during the upcoming Ashes series, which begins on November 21 in Perth.
Currently ranked number one in the Test rankings, Root has 39 centuries to his name, but none of them have come Down Under. Much has already been said about Root’s failure to register a hundred against Australia on their home turf.
Nobody has dominated Test cricket quite like Root since 2022. His numbers over the last two World Test Championship cycles are evidence of that. The in-form mainstay of England’s batting line-up is tipped by the batting coach to come good with the bat.
“The way he’s gone in the last couple of years probably explains that he’s comfortable with what he’s trying to do, and how he’s playing his game,” Trescothick said. “His game has gone to the next level, and that’s the reason he is where he is in the rankings. You would be very surprised if he doesn’t carry on in that same sort of vein, given the style of play and the type of player he is.”
Trescothick also hinted that the visitors will play just one warm-up fixture prior to the first Test at the Optus Stadium, with the side scheduled to take on the England Lions in a three-day intra-squad match in Perth from Thursday.
