In a significant trade, all-rounder Shardul Thakur has been acquired by the Mumbai Indians from the Lucknow Super Giants. The IPL media advisory confirmed the development on Thursday, November 13.
The trade comes two days before the deadline for player releases (15 November, 5:00 p.m. IST), which could include some of the marquee names from last season. The Mumbai-based all-rounder joins the MI setup for ₹2 crore — the same sum at which he was picked up by the Lucknow Super Giants as an injury replacement for the 18th edition of the league, in which he featured in ten games.
“Shardul has been a utility player for the franchises he has represented, putting in clutch performances time and again. The all-rounder has been traded to the Mumbai Indians for his existing player fee of ₹2 crore,” said the IPL media release.
This marks the third time Shardul has been traded in the IPL. He first moved to Rising Pune Supergiant from Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in 2017, and ahead of the 2023 season, he was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders from Delhi Capitals — both being all-cash deals.
So far in his IPL career, Shardul has played 105 matches, taking 107 wickets and achieving a highest score of 68.
“Shardul has been a proven match-winner in the IPL as well as for India in international cricket, and his addition gives the Mumbai Indians more experience while bolstering an already strong pace attack,” said the MI media release.
The 34-year-old Shardul will turn out for his seventh IPL franchise this season, having earlier represented Punjab Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Lucknow Super Giants.
