West Indies all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford will once again represent the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2026 season, after being traded from the Gujarat Titans (GT). This will be Rutherford’s second stint with MI; he was previously part of the squad in 2020, although he didn’t get a chance to play that year.
Rutherford was bought by GT for Rs 2.6 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction, and MI have traded for him at the same price. The left-handed batter, known for his aggressive hitting, scored 291 runs for GT last year at an average of 33.22.
Rutherford has represented the West Indies in 44 T20Is and 19 ODIs, scoring a total of 1,246 runs. One of his most memorable performances in the 20-over format came against Australia in Perth, where he made history by sharing a 139-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Andre Russell — the highest at that position in T20Is.
In his IPL career so far, Rutherford has played 23 matches, scoring 397 runs at an average of 22.00. The 27-year-old has previously played for Delhi Capitals in 2019 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2022. He was also part of the title-winning Kolkata Knight Riders squad in 2024, although he didn’t feature in any game.
For the Mumbai Indians, this trade could further strengthen a batting line-up that already boasts star players such as Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya. Earlier in the day, Shardul Thakur was also traded to MI from the Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 2 crore.
