The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday reprimanded the Shaheen Shah Afridi-led side for maintaining a slow over-rate in the opening ODI of the three-match series against Sri Lanka at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.
According to the apex cricketing body, the hosts were found to be four overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration, which led to the sanction. The charges were imposed by Ali Naqvi of the ICC Panel of Match Referees.
Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl within the allotted time.
Since captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, who was leading the side for the first time in ODI cricket, accepted the charge, there was no need for a formal hearing after on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Asif Yaqoob, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Rashid Riaz levelled the allegation.
The Men in Green registered a hard-fought six-run win in the series opener. The second ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be played on the 14th, and the third is scheduled for 16th November in Rawalpindi.
