Shubman Gill is in doubt for the second Test in Guwahati after being admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata on Saturday. The India captain, who retired hurt on the second day of the first Test here at Eden Gardens, experienced severe neck pain as the day progressed, it is learnt. Eventually, it was decided to take him to the hospital, where he has been kept under observation. The admission process is complete and it is learnt that Gill will be monitored through the night.

According to sources, the 26-year-old has been administered medicines but it will take a few days for him to be fit. This puts his participation in the second Test between India and South Africa in Guwahati, starting on November 22, in doubt. During South Africa’s second innings today, Rishabh Pant, the team’s designated vice-captain, led the side in Gill’s absence.

At the post-day press conference, asked about Gill’s injury, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel said: “I think we first need to determine how he got neck stiffness, maybe just a bad night’s sleep. I don’t think we can put it down to the load. Shubman is a very fit guy, he looks after himself very well, so it’s just unfortunate this morning that he woke up with a stiff neck and that carried him into the day, which was crucial for us.”
