Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly believes that veteran pacer Mohammed Shami should get a chance once again in the Indian Test team.

Speaking on Sports Tak, Ganguly highlighted that Shami’s skillset and experience make him a crucial match-winner for India, especially in home conditions.

“He must have faith in Bumrah, Siraj, and Shami. I think Shami deserves a place in this Test team. Shami and the spinners will win Test matches for him,” Ganguly said, emphasising that Shami’s role remains vital even after a long injury layoff.

Shami suffered a knee injury that kept him away from cricket for more than a year, forcing him to miss several major series. He eventually made a comeback towards the end of last year against England in white-ball cricket. His last appearance for India came during the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, a tournament India went on to win.

However, his performance in the IPL while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) was below expectations, and as a result, he was not selected for several key assignments that followed — including the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series in England, the Asia Cup 2025, and the two-match Test series against West Indies. The selectors cited fitness concerns as the primary reason behind his omission.

Recently, Shami has shown strong signs of returning to top form while playing for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. He has taken an impressive 15 wickets in the first three matches of the season. On day one of the ongoing match against Assam in Kalyani, Shami picked up two wickets.
