Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa to be played here in Guwahati from November 22, it is learnt. RevSportz broke the story on November 18 that the India captain was all but ruled out of the series decider. And although he has travelled with the team to Guwahati, he won’t play. Rishabh Pant will lead India in the second Test.

Gill suffered a neck injury while batting in the first innings during the first Test at Eden Gardens. That was last Saturday. As the pain became severe, he was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata later that day. He was discharged Sunday evening but the pain still didn’t subside fully that time. He is better now but Gill will start neck exercises in a day and as per the specialists, he will need another 5-7 days to be fit. The earliest Gill can return to cricket is the upcoming ODI series against South Africa starting on November 30.

On Wednesday, the BCCI put out a media advisory, saying: “Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day’s play.”

It added: “He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025.

“He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly.”

Gill will continue with his recovery process under the supervision of the BCCI medical team.
