Despite being released by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Venkatesh Iyer hopes to represent his former franchise once again to repay the faith the team has shown in him over the years.
Ahead of the November 15 deadline, KKR released the highest number of players among the ten franchises. Iyer was one of the most notable releases, alongside Andre Russell. The team management had appointed Iyer as vice-captain after he was acquired for Rs 23.75 crore by the Knight Riders in the mega auction.
“For players like us, it’s the opportunity to play in the IPL that matters. It doesn’t matter which team I play for; I will put my best foot forward. If I listen to my heart, I would still want to play for KKR. I won one championship with KKR, and I want to continue the legacy. I want to bring more glory to KKR because they have shown so much faith in me,” Iyer told CricTracker in an interview.
If KKR fail to buy him back, Iyer will look to give his best in all departments for whichever new franchise he joins.
“If not KKR, then anywhere else. Everyone knows that wherever I go, I will look to give my best. Not just in terms of my batting or bowling, but also in contributing leadership and offering suggestions to the captain,” he added.
Having played for India, Iyer will be one of the few capped Indian marquee players in the auction. The Knight Riders could potentially buy him back at a lower price.
