At its convocation ceremony on December 24, Jadavpur University intends to present Harmanpreet Kaur, Women’s Cricket World Cup-winning captain, with an Honorary D Litt. The new vice-chancellor, Chiranjib Bhattacharya, called a meeting of university deans to discuss the idea which was later approved by the Governor and Chancellor CV Ananda Bose.
The university is also expected to invite Nobel laureate Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee as the chief guest. The names of NRF CEO Shivkumar Kalyanaraman and DRDO Chairman Sameer V Kamat were also accepted as alternate possibilities though only one will be selected.
The D Litt recipient and chief guest will be formally confirmed at the next meeting of the Executive Committee. The selected individuals will be asked for their consent after approval.
Due to the university not having a full-time vice chancellor, the governor had objected to the convocation for the past two years. As a result, two interim vice-chancellors had resigned. However, now that Bhattacharya is in charge, everyone is expected to approve of the convocation and ensure it takes place smoothly.
