BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has defended head coach Gautam Gambhir amid social media trolls after India’s loss in the first Test of the two-match series against South Africa.

In an exclusive interview with RevSportz, when asked whether the board stands with the coach in this tough time, he said that the BCCI has full support for everyone associated with the team.

“The BCCI has full confidence in our selectors, our coaching team, including the head coach and the players,” he said. “We do not distinguish anybody. We give full support and that is why they are doing well.”

Saikia dismissed such calls, highlighting that under Gambhir, the team has consistently delivered in major tournaments, including the ICC Champions Trophy, Asia Cup 2025 and Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England.

“As you were saying, if somebody is losing a match, there is flak on social media. That we are always ignoring, because at the same time, with the same team, we are winning the Champions Trophy, we are performing exceedingly well in the Asia Cup, we won the trophy and we levelled the series against England in England,” he added.

Gautam Gambhir faced severe backlash after his pitch comments following the first Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where India failed to chase 124 against South Africa and lost the match by 30 runs.

Some fans even urged the board to remove Gambhir from the position of coach. However, Saikia believes that in a cricket-loving nation like India, everyone is bound to have their own opinion, but that will not influence any decision taken by the board.
