Explainer – Why Shubman Gill is taking more time to recover from neck injury

Shubman Gill has no nerve injury. The injury isn’t serious either. So why the delay?

Shubman Gill, the Indian red-ball and white-ball 50-over skipper, has no nerve injury. Let us also say this very clearly, his injury isn’t serious. Then the obvious question is what’s causing him to be out of the team and why this long delay?

In normal circumstances, neck spasms are a very common thing. If you sleep on a different pillow for example or undertake a long flight, you might get a stiff neck. Gill too has had similar issues in the past and each time the problem has been solved in 2 days and he has been able to get back into action. This time round also he was confident that the pain would subside in 2 days and for him to play the Guwahati Test. That was one of the reasons why he travelled with the team, not to mention the fact that he wanted to be with the boys when the team was 0-1 down.

However, the problem did not go away in 2 days. And here’s the interesting part. If neck spasms don’t get better in 2 days, it can take as long as 15-20 days to completely get better with rest. And, yes, it does get 100 percent okay with rest. Having consulted multiple medical experts and doctors and people in the know, this is what has been confirmed to me.

If Gill takes a 15-20 day break, he’d get completely okay without any further issue. But as an elite athlete and as India’s captain, Gill doesn’t have that kind of time to rest up. Here comes the injection. If you don’t have that kind of time to rest up and get well, doctors administer you with an injection that hastens the process of recovery. It takes 3 days for the full impact of the injection to kick in, and once that happens, the rehab process can start. Gill was administered the injection, and he is already doing much better is what sources have confirmed. In a day or so, his rehab will start. It will depend on the pace of the rehab when we can see him back on the field.

At this point, while Gill is out of the ODI series, he is still hopeful of turning up for the T20Is against South Africa. However, it will all depend on the pace of his rehab as to when he gets fully fit. Doctors are also confident that if the rehab goes well, Gill can turn up for the T-20Is against the Proteas, but it is impossible to commit at the moment.

So, while there is no nerve injury and it isn’t serious, Gill will still need a bit of time to get back to action. All one can hope is that once the rehab starts in a day or so, it goes to plan and we can see Gill back for the T20Is versus South Africa. Failing this, he will have to wait for the New Year to play competitive cricket again.
