KL Rahul has been appointed captain of the 15-man squad announced by the BCCI on Sunday, 23 November. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer have been ruled out due to their respective injury concerns for the series, which will also mark the return of Ravindra Jadeja.
Having led India in 12 ODIs, Rahul is no stranger to the role and has been a regular part of the ODI set-up since 2022.
Axar Patel was preferred over Jadeja for the ODI series in Australia, which India lost 2–1.
Also making a comeback after a long hiatus are Tilak Varma and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Both batters come into the squad to fill in for Iyer and Gill.
Rishabh Pant, who was considered a potential captain for the series, has been included in the squad. The in-form Dhruv Jurel has also made the cut.
Among the other changes to the squad are Mohammed Siraj and Varun Chakravarthy, who have been left out.
India will host South Africa in a three-match ODI series starting on November 30. The first ODI will take place at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, while the second ODI is scheduled for December 3 at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur. The final ODI will be played on December 6 at the Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
ODI squad: Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul (C & Wk), Rishabh Pant (Wk), Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Dhruv Jurel.
