Former India cricketer Suresh Raina is concerned about India’s current Test form after the team’s horror show with the bat and ball in the Guwahati Test, which has left them on the verge of a series whitewash.
Raina believes India’s issues run deeper than a single defeat. The former left-handed batter pointed out that the problems lie in technique, planning, and how the team approaches slow, turning pitches at home.
“The difference between South Africa and India is that we are not playing spin well,” Raina said while speaking to NDTV during the Indian Softball Cricket League jersey launch. “That’s what we used to do. The USP of Indian batters was their ability to play spin well.”
Raina said the defeat at Eden Gardens was not mainly about the pitch but about how India handled the tough conditions in comparison with South Africa. “Absolutely, I think India are missing a glue in the middle order. They still have a lot of quality players… but they haven’t played much cricket since Australia. We lost against New Zealand as well,” he said.
The 38-year-old further said that head coach Gautam Gambhir has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders and needs to strategise better for the team. “The coach (Gautam Gambhir) can’t say ‘I’m doing better.’ He has a lot of responsibility. He has to strategise for the team to work session by session,” he concluded.
