South Africa defeated India comprehensively by 408 runs in the second Test of the two-match series in Guwahati, whitewashing India 2-0. Rishabh Pant, who captained the second match in Shubman Gill’s absence due to injury, apologised to fans for the team’s disappointing performance.

In a social media post, Pant wrote:

“There is no shying away from the fact that we did not play good enough cricket over the last two weeks. As a team and as individuals, we always want to perform at the highest level and bring smiles to millions of Indians. Sorry we could not live up to expectations this time, but sport teaches you to learn, adapt and grow – both as a team and as individuals. Representing India is the greatest honour of our lives. We know what this team is capable of, and we will work hard, regroup, refocus and reset to come back stronger and better as a team and as individuals. Thank you for your unwavering support and love! Jai Hind.”

India struggled in all departments during the series and were outplayed by South Africa. For the first time in 30 years, none of the Indian batters managed to score a century in a home series. This marks the second time in the past year that India has been whitewashed. Prior to the New Zealand series in 2024, India had won 18 consecutive home series.

After this performance, fans have expressed their frustration on social media. However, both captain Gill and vice-captain Pant have offered messages of reassurance and hope. They have acknowledged the mistakes and remain committed to learning from the defeat and returning stronger.
