Lahli is a small and sleepy town in Haryana. One day, a piece of news made the residents super happy. What was it? Lahli would host the Master Blaster’s final Ranji Trophy match. The fact that the residents could watch Sachin Tendulkar play in their stadium brought glee to their faces. However, the officials started panicking. The tension was palpable and understandable. The town did not have even a four-star hotel.
So, where would they put him up? Sachin, who is a God-like figure in Indian cricket, was accustomed to staying in luxury hotels, where dishes were prepared by some of the best culinary experts in the world.
The hotel where the Master Blaster was supposed to stay reportedly hired a chef from Delhi’s ITC Maurya to prepare food for him. To everyone’s surprise, the batting maestro reportedly went gaga over aloo gobhi, baajreki roti and lassi that are, a typical daily Haryanvi meal.

Simple Foods, Big Thinking
That incident reveals a lot about a hidden side of Sachin. He is a very down-to-earth person when it comes to food. According to those who have known him for many years, he is not fussy about food. During his school days when Sachin used to regularly visit Coach Ramakant Achrekar’s camp for practice, he used to snack on his favourite Bhel. As a Mumbaikar, he loves vada pav. Chana dal is another of his desi favourites.
Seafood Crazy
Seafood never fails to tease Sachin’s taste buds. He loves his maa kihaatki (cooked by his mother) fish curry and prawns. The meal that he lovedafter a long tour was varan bhaat, a dish that his mom Rajni Devi prepared with lemon and a dash of ghee. Sachin is so fond of this simple dish that he reportedly instructed his cook to learn the recipe from his mother.

Trying New Cuisines
Sachin travels a lot. He loves to pamper his taste buds with new cuisines wherever he goes. He is particularly fond of sushi, the most popular Japanese cuisine overseas. Sashimi is another famous Japanese dish that he likes a lot. He even took Suresh Raina, his India teammate, to a Japanese restaurant to introduce him to sushi and sashimi.
When travelling, Sachin is always excited about trying out new cuisines, whether it is Lebanese, Chinese, Caribbean, Ethiopian, Thai or Malaysian.
According to Boria Majumdar, a famous Indian sports journalist, writer and historian, “Sachin understands the intricacies of Japanese food”. Boria watched him add a dash of olive oil to the wasabi and make a fine blend. It was an innovative concoction, and the result was “fantastic”. What does it prove? Sachin is open to experimenting with foods.
Boria notes that Sachin loves ordering food. It shows that the Master Blaster is extremely passionate about it, maybe as much as he is about cooking and music, his other passions.
The unparalleled hype over the India-Pakistan cricket match always reaches new heights when the two arch-rivals face each other in the ICC World Cup. How can one forget Sachin’s breezy and brilliant knock of 98 from 75 balls against the dreaded fast-bowling trio of Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar during the 2003 World Cup? India clinched a six-wicket victory in a rousing match. Only a few know that Sachin skipped his lunch that day, and enjoyed a large bowl of ice cream before his whirlwind innings.

A Self-Confessed Foodie
When it comes to food, there are differences between being a foodie and being fussy. Sachin is not fussy, but he is definitely a foodie who loves everything from homemade khana prepared by his mom to local delicacies wherever he goes.
On being asked if he could name a single food that he dislikes, Sachin answered: “Snails”. He admitted to having tried snails along with garlic sauce, but confessed that he did not like the taste.
Sachin will complete his half-century on his next birthday, April 24. May he stay in fine fettle and enjoy good food for many more years to come. Revsportz wishes him a very Happy Birthday!
