Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal on Thursday confirmed that an Indian player will lead the franchise in next year’s WPL. His remark came after DC picked South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt from the marquee set at the auction for Rs 1.10 crore.
DC retained five players from last season, and this did not include Meg Lanning, who led them to three successive finals and was also their highest run-scorer. Wolvaardt has led South Africa to two ICC finals in the last two years. After securing her services, she was seen as a possible captaincy option for DC. However, Parth clarified that no overseas player will be considered for the role.
Speaking at the mid-auction press conference, Jindal said, “We are very clear we want an Indian as captain. We have our minds made up. We think Laura can fill Lanning’s boots. Our spin attack is even better than last time. It looks like a very balanced team. We missed some explosiveness last year, which we have in Chinelle Henry now.”
Jemimah Rodrigues, who was retained by DC, becomes the frontrunner to lead the team.
At a base price of Rs 30 lakh, the bidding for Wolvaardt began, and after a mini-battle with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, last season’s runners-up eventually secured her for Rs 1.1 crore.
The South African skipper is being viewed as a replacement for Lanning, which suggests she could be seen opening with Shafali Verma.
Apart from Wolvaardt, other marquee players bought by DC are Chinelle Henry, Shree Charani, Sneh Rana, Lizelle Lee and Deeya Yadav.
