The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) will honour Harmanpreet Kaur and Yuvraj Singh by naming stadium stands after the Punjab cricket icons. These stands will be situated at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.
The new stands are set to be unveiled on December 11 before the fourth T20I between India and South Africa. This decision has been taken to pay tribute to the two World Cup-winning legends.
The PCA’s officiating secretary, Siddhant Sharma, confirmed the news on Saturday.
“Harmanpreet Kaur will be honoured for her achievement in winning the World Cup, and we have announced that a stand will be named after her. On the 11th, during the India–South Africa match, we will inaugurate it. Along with that, a stand named after our former player and two-time World Cup champion, Yuvraj Singh, will also be inaugurated on the same day,” Siddhant told IANS.
Harmanpreet recently led India to their first-ever Women’s World Cup title, while Yuvraj was one of the architects of India’s victories in the two men’s World Cups. The PCA will also present the cash reward that was announced for their contributions to the World Cup triumph to Harmanpreet and Amanjot Kaur during the unveiling ceremony.
“A stand being named after them is a tiny gesture compared to the great feats they’ve achieved for the nation. This is a small token from us to them in recognition of their achievements,” added Siddhant.
Looking ahead, Siddhant believes these honours will be an inspiration for future generations, saying, “The up-and-coming players will gain inspiration from cricketers like Harmanpreet, Smriti Mandhana, and Jemimah. They’re the ones who motivate the young girls… We also have some surprises coming up for everyone.”
