India’s young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal praised Shubman Gill, the captain of the team in Tests and ODIs, for his dedication to the game.
Speaking on Aaj Tak, Jaiswal said: “Shubman Gill. I have seen him very closely recently. He works hard a lot, and is also very consistent with his routines. (He) works a lot on his fitness, diet, skills and training. It is unbelievable.”
After Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket, Gill was handed the captaincy by the selectors, and the right-handed batter proved them right with an outstanding tour of England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, both as a captain and as a batter. He was the highest scorer of the series, getting 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40, which included four hundreds. Under his captaincy, India made a great comeback in the series to draw it 2-2.
He is currently the ODI skipper and vice-captain of the T20I side as well.
Gill also led India to a 2-0 victory against the West Indies in home. However, the 25-year-old suffered a neck issue during the first Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata against South Africa and hence, missed the following Test and the three-match home ODI series. India were whitewashed in that series 2-0. He made his return in the first T20I against South Africa.
Jaiswal praised Gill for his performance in England and said that the team had belief in their captain.
“I enjoy a lot watching him and playing with him. He is an amazing man as well. He batted superbly and sensibly during the England Test series. We believed in him that he will perform in every situation.”
