Team India legend, Sunil Gavaskar has supported the selection of Ishan Kishan in India’s T20 World Cup squad, which was announced on Saturday, December 20.
Gavaskar said on JioStar that the best time to pick a player in the national squad is when he is performing well in domestic cricket.
“When you see someone performing, you pick him. Ishan Kishan has already been in the side and shown he can do it. That is a big plus. His current form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy proves that domestic cricket performance must be the selection criteria, not just the IPL. I am very happy for him. He was out of the team for a couple of years but made a fantastic comeback by leading his state team Jharkhand to a title-winning season.”
Kishan led from the front and scored 101 runs off 49 balls, including ten sixes and six fours, at a strike rate of 206.12 in the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025/26 to guide Jharkhand to their first title. He was the highest scorer of the tournament with 517 runs from 10 innings at an average of 57.44. This performance helped him earn a spot in the World Cup squad.
Gavaskar also feels that Jitesh Sharma did “nothing wrong” to be left out of the team.
“I feel for Jitesh Sharma though. He did nothing wrong. He was a very good wicketkeeper in his chances, and after MS Dhoni, he was perhaps the best at helping the captain with DRS calls from behind the stumps. It is tough on him, but he is young. He just needs to go back to domestic cricket and keep performing,” he added.
