Fast bowler Richard Ngarava has been named Zimbabwe’s new Test and ODI captain, while Brian Bennett has been appointed his deputy, Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed on Saturday (December 20).
Ngarava, who has represented the country in over 150 matches, replaces Craig Ervine, who stepped down as captain after years of service.
The decision was taken during the ZC Board’s fourth-quarter meeting in Harare. One of the leaders of the bowling group, Ngarava steps into his new role with the full backing of the board.
“Ngarava has shown remarkable growth as a player and leader over the years,” ZC chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani said. “He commands respect within the dressing room and has consistently delivered for Zimbabwe across all formats. We believe he is ready to lead the team into its next chapter.”
Bennett has made giant strides since making his ODI and Test debuts last year. Early in his international career, the 22-year-old already has centuries across three formats of the game.
“Brian’s appointment as vice-captain reflects our confidence in his cricketing intelligence, maturity and long-term leadership potential. He represents the future of Zimbabwean cricket. Craig Ervine led with professionalism, resilience and dignity during a challenging period, and ZC is deeply grateful for his contribution to the team’s stability and progress.”
Meanwhile, it has been decided that Sikandar Raza, the 39-year-old all-rounder, will continue to lead the team in T20Is. Zimbabwe will kickstart their campaign against Oman in Colombo on February 9.
