Virat Kohli once more brightened up the Centre of Excellence by exploring every nook and cranny of the ground. However, unlike the other day, when he cracked a scintillating ton, he had to be satisfied with 77 versus Gujarat, in a Vijay Hazare trophy game.
On a pitch that offered a little more help for the pacers and spinners, Kohli was in good rhythm right from the start of his innings. The batting maestro, who walked out to bat 2 for 1, gave a glimpse of what was to come by thwacking Chintan Gaja down the ground for a six. For a while, Arzan Nagwaswalla, the left-armer, troubled him, even beating him on the outside edge with a delivery that moved away off the seam.
Just that, Kohli responded with a sumptuous cut shot. At one point of time, Kohli had raced away to 50 off 29 deliveries, which included 10 fours and a six. Ravi Bishnoi too was greeted with shots. In frustration, the spinner threw one back at Kohli.
It was the introduction of Vishal Jayswal and Amit Desai that slowed down Delhi’s scoring rate as they slid to 98 for 3. Kohli, though, still looked to be proactive, essaying a few cut strokes. Ultimately, he tried one shot too many and was stumped by Urvil Patel off Jayswal, the left-arm orthodox spinner.
It may not have been your archetypal Kohli innings as he was prepared to take lots of risks at the domestic level. But when it comes to one-day cricket, he once more showed that he is indeed ‘King Kohli’.
