Former Australia cricketer Damien Martyn has been hospitalised with an illness in Brisbane. The 2003 ODI World Cup winner was admitted after falling ill in recent days. He is currently in an induced coma due to meningitis, and several members of the Australian cricket fraternity have sent their wishes for his speedy recovery.
In a statement, Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg said: “I’m saddened to hear of Damien’s illness. The best wishes of everyone at Cricket Australia and in the wider cricket community are with him at this time.”
Martyn’s former Australia teammate and close friend, Adam Gilchrist, also provided an update. “He is getting the best of treatment and (Martyn’s partner) Amanda and his family know that a lot of people are sending their prayers and best wishes,” Gilchrist stated.
Martyn represented Australia in 279 international matches across all three formats, including 67 Tests, 208 ODIs, and four T20Is. He scored a total of 9,872 international runs, which included 18 centuries and 61 fifties.
He was an integral part of Australia’s 2003 ODI World Cup-winning squad. One of the most memorable achievements of his career came in India, where he won the Player of the Series award. That series marked the last time Australia defeated India on Indian soil, with Martyn top-scoring in four of Australia’s eight innings during the 2004 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Meanwhile, another former teammate and former Australia head coach, Darren Lehmann, also took to Twitter to share his message of support. “Lots of love and prayers sending Damien Martyn’s way. Keep strong and fighting legend,” he wrote.
