Naveen-ul-Haq and Gulbadin Naib have been recalled by the Afghanistan selectors for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka. The 15-player squad will be led by the experienced spinner Rashid Khan, with Ibrahim Zadran as his deputy.
Naveen, the pace bowler, has recovered from his shoulder problem. Incidentally, he last played for Afghanistan in a T20I in December 2024. Meanwhile, left-arm pacer, Fazalhaq Farooqi, has also been recalled. On the other hand, mystery spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s inclusion will be adding experience to the set-up.
Young fast bowler Abdullah Ahmadzai has also earned a place in the main squad. Shahidullah Kamal and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Ishaq have retained their spots. Mystery spinner AM Ghazanfar has been included in the reserves, along with Ijaz Ahmadzai and Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi.
Afghanistan Cricket Board CEO Naseeb Khan said, “Afghanistan had a terrific run in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup. We cherish excellent memories from the past and hope for even better results this year, which will be played in Asian conditions. Hosting the West Indies team provides us with an incredible opportunity to fine-tune our combination and prepare adequately for the World Cup”
The same squad will be partaking in a three-match T20I series against the West Indies, in the UAE, from January 19 to 22. This series will give the team a crucial chance to prepare before the mega event. After reaching the semi-final in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Afghanistan will be hoping to find more success in this edition.
