Mumbai Indians (MI) registered a thumping win over Delhi Capitals (DC), handing Jemimah Rodrigues a 50-run defeat on her captaincy debut in WPL 2026 at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai. Now, DC have a chance to make a quick comeback as they are set to face Gujarat Giants (GG) at the very same venue on January 11.
For DC, it turned out to be a horrible outing in the season opener, especially with the bat. While chasing a 196-run target, they were bundled out for 145, and the shot selection of top players like Shafali Verma, Laura Wolvaardt, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Marizanne Kapp left fans surprised and concerned. How quickly, in less than 24 hours, they can regroup and address those mistakes remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, GG announced their arrival this season in style with a 10-run win over Meg Lanning’s UP Warriorz (UPW). With the bat, they posted their highest-ever total in WPL history (207/4), with skipper Ashleigh Gardner leading from the front, and valuable support from youngster Anushka Sharma and Georgia Wareham. Their bowlers then held their nerve to seal the win. Hence, GG will look to continue their winning momentum, while another loss could put DC under pressure early in the tournament.

Players to watch out for
Delhi Capitals – Chinelle Henry
The West Indies all-rounder showcased her brutal power-hitting and ability to take early wickets with the new ball. Henry provided the early breakthrough by dismissing MI’s Amelia Kerr with a beautiful outswinger. With the bat, her effort went in vain, but she still struck at 169.69, scoring 56 off 33 balls.
Last season, she produced a few such impactful knocks, and expectations were high coming into this year. She delivered in the very first game, but the lack of support from the other end proved costly. The key question around Henry will be consistency – how often she can score quick runs or provide crucial powerplay wickets according to the situation.
Gujarat Giants – Georgia Wareham
Australia’s leg-spinning all-rounder won the Player of the Match award against UPW for her all-round brilliance. After the 103-run partnership between Anushka Sharma and skipper Ashleigh Gardner, Wareham smashed an unbeaten 27 off 10 balls at a strike rate of 270.00. With the ball, just when the partnership between Meg Lanning and Phoebe Litchfield started to gain control, she struck twice in the same over, dismissing Lanning and Harleen Deol.
In a high-scoring game where 404 runs were made, Wareham conceded just 7.5 runs per over in her four overs while picking up two wickets. Once again, her role will be crucial, and her battle against batters like Wolvaardt or Jemimah in the middle overs could define the match.
