Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood believes he is on track with his recovery to play in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which begins next month, after missing the majority of the Ashes series.
A hamstring injury, followed by an Achilles problem during his rehabilitation, kept Hazlewood out of action for weeks during the Australian summer. Despite a long history of injury concerns, Hazlewood has been named in Australia’s 15-member squad for the World Cup. The 35-year-old pacer remains on track in terms of regaining full fitness.
“Everything’s going to plan,” Hazlewood told ESPNcricinfo. “We took a few extra weeks once we couldn’t make the Test matches. Running’s going well and all the strength work is going well, so I’m on track.”
Hazlewood is not taking any risks with his ageing body and understands that he may not be able to play a long series of matches.
“I feel young in that attack,” Hazlewood, who turned 35 in early January, joked. “[But] I’m certainly realistic. I still think the hardest hurdle for me is the first one. So if you get over that first one, things can roll on. But if you play too many in a row, obviously weakness starts to creep in. So if you sort of sense that coming, yes, you might have to sit one out.”
The veteran Aussie pacer will not feature in the latter stages of the BBL or in the T20I series against Pakistan in late January, but is likely to be fit ahead of Australia’s first World Cup game against Ireland on February 11.
