Former New Zealand fast bowler Simon Doull questioned Indian veteran batter Rohit Sharma’s hunger to play in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2027, which will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Speaking during his commentary stint in the final ODI of the three-match series between India and New Zealand, Doull said:
“I feel with Rohit, he’s always had something to chase, a goal in mind, whether it be a T20 World Cup or a 50-over World Cup. I just wonder, that 2027 World Cup in South Africa, is that too far away? Does he have that real hunger? Maybe it’s just different every year, isn’t it? Because we’re building up. We seem to be building up as national sides, no matter who you are. Each year, you’re building up to a different format of an ICC event, aren’t you?”
Rohit failed in all three matches of the ongoing series. Although he got starts in the first two matches, scoring 26 and 24 respectively, the seasoned batter could not convert them. In the third match, he managed only 11 runs.
Although the 38-year-old did not have a good series against New Zealand, he was in good touch during the tour of Australia, where he was the top run-scorer of the series with 202 runs, including a century and a fifty. In the subsequent series against South Africa, he scored 146 runs in three matches, including two half-centuries.
