Team India captain Shubman Gill expressed his disappointment after losing the series decider by 41 runs against New Zealand in Indore.
Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Gill said: “After the first match, coming here 1-1, the way we played – a bit disappointed. Lot of areas that need some improvement. There are areas we need to look back, reflect and do better.”
New Zealand put up a big total of 337/8, thanks to two brilliant knocks from Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips. Mitchell scored 137, while Phillips made 106. For India, Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/63.
In reply, Virat Kohli scored his 85th international century. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana also put up a strong fight with half-centuries each, but that was not enough. Kristian Clarke finished with figures of 3/54 as India fell short. New Zealand won the series 2-1.
Gill believes there are positives for India to take from the series, especially Harshit’s batting.
“The way Virat bhai is batting, that’s definitely a plus always. The way Harshit has batted in this series, batting at No. 8, it’s not easy, but the way he stepped up and the way our fast bowlers have bowled in this series has been pretty good. Keeping the World Cup in mind and where it’s going to be, we want to give him opportunities and we want to give him enough overs when he’s out there and just see what kind of combinations work for us and what kind of deliveries work for him as well,” he added.
