A captain’s innings from Jemimah Rodrigues and a fitting six from Marizanne Kapp off the last ball of the 19th over sealed an important win for Delhi Capitals in Monday’s WPL 2026 match in Vadodara. Put in to bat, Mumbai Indians posted 154/5, which DC chased down losing three wickets.
MI’s batting was a tale of sharp contrast between a sluggish start and a powerful middle phase, before DC pulled things back at the death.
MI were rocked early, crawling to 23/2 in the power play, the lowest score of the season in that phase, as Marizanne Kapp delivered a devastating opening spell of 1/8. Bowling all her overs inside the first eight, Kapp once again underlined her dominance in this phase of the WPL, extracting movement, hitting hard lengths and conceding very little, with MI’s top order unable to break free.
The innings turned decisively once Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt came together. From overs 7 to 15, MI- scored at a blistering 9.88 runs per over, adding 89 and completely shifting momentum. Harmanpreet was particularly fluent, striking some exquisite shots and manipulating the field superbly. One over against Shafali Verma stood out, where she expertly worked the gaps to collect a hat-trick of fours.
Just as Harmanpreet looked set for a big score, she holed out to long-on, but Sciver-Brunt ensured MI did not lose control. Batting deep, she anchored the innings with authority, absorbing pressure while still keeping the scoreboard moving.
DC responded well in the closing stages. Tight 18th and 19th overs, conceding just 11 runs combined, ensured Sciver-Brunt was denied the big hits at the end. A crucial six from Sanskriti Gupta off the final over pushed MI past the 150 mark.
Overall, MI’s innings progression reflected their recovery: 55/2 in the first 10 overs, followed by 99/3 in the back 10. While the start was a major concern, the class and composure of Harmanpreet and Sciver-Brunt ensured they posted a competitive total.
Lizelle Lee and Shafali came out with their usual attacking intent and took DC to 57/0 in the first six overs. That was followed by an impressive bowling partnership between debutant Vaishnavi Sharma, who came in for the injured G Kamalini, and Amanjot Kaur, who continues to show marked improvement. In that six-over phase, MI restricted DC to 35/2, removing both set openers, Shafali for 29 and Lee for 46.
While Shafali was dismissed after shuffling too much against Vaishnavi, Lee was stumped following a brilliant leg-side take by debutant Rahila Firdous. Although Lee had grounded her bat, it came off the surface just before the bails were removed. After taking his time, third umpire Ajitesh Argal gave an excellent decision.
Jemimah and Wolvaardt then stitched together a calm 34 off 35 balls and looked set to take the game deep. However, against the run of play, Wolvaardt was run out while backing up to a straight drive from Jemimah. Sciver-Brunt got a deflection while trying to stop the ball, which hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end.
Jemimah realised the responsibility was now hers and responded emphatically, scoring 26 off 11 balls after Wolvaardt’s dismissal. Kapp, despite recent struggles with the bat, played the perfect second fiddle. With six runs needed off seven balls, Sciver-Brunt bowled a slower off-cutter on middle stump. Kapp went on to the back foot and pulled it over mid-wicket for a six, wrapping up the game in style.
DC now have four points from five games, the same as Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz. DC move from fifth to fourth on the table, with all three teams having the same number of matches remaining and two playoff spots still up for grabs. DC’s next game is against table-toppers RCB on January 24.
MI, meanwhile, have now suffered three consecutive losses. Despite sitting second on the points table with four points and a healthy net run rate, they have already played six games and can reach a maximum of only eight. MI face RCB next on January 26.
Can MI make a comeback? Will this victory change DC’s momentum? WPL 2026 continues to grow in intrigue. There is a day’s break before UP Warriorz take on Gujarat Giants, a clash that could significantly impact the congested mid-table battle.
