Former Indian Captain and coach Ravi Shastri lauded Abhishek Sharma as the most exciting player to watch at the T20 World Cup 2026. As India prepare to defend their T20 World Cup title at home Shastri believes Abhishek will be a match winner for the Indian team.
When asked, at an ICC event, about the most impactful player at the upcoming World Cup, Shastri answered, “Abhishek, without a shadow of a doubt. (He’s the) No. 1 T20 batsman in the world (and is) in a rich vein of form.”
In the opening T20I of the five-match series against New Zealand, Abhishek smashed 84 runs off just 35 balls. His fearless knock included five boundaries and eight maximums at the strike rate of 240.00 which completely changed the momentum of the game. He stitched a crucial 99 runs partnership with captain Suryakumar Yadav (32) in only 47 balls, which gave India a brilliant start as the team posted a massive total of 238 at the loss of seven wickets. India secured 48-run win and started the series on a positive note.
Shastri further added, “Last evening (on Wednesday), he took the game away from New Zealand. You’ve got to watch out for him because his confidence level is high. He’ll be backed by the home crowd, and if he takes off, it means India takes off.”
India will meet New Zealand for the second T20I at Raipur on January 23.
