Pakistan T20I skipper Salman Ali Agha emphasised that India won the Champions Trophy last year because they “played well” in Dubai, where the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team played all their matches.
Just as India were confined to Dubai during last year’s Champions Trophy, Salman and his team will be based in Colombo for the T20 World Cup 2026. As per the pre-decided agreement, the 2009 champions will play all their matches at the R Premadasa Stadium and the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground. Both venues are located in Colombo.
“It is an advantage. The other teams will be travelling and staying in different hotels, playing at different grounds,” Salman said while addressing a press conference in Lahore. “We will also be playing at different grounds in Colombo but will be staying at the same hotel. However, that doesn’t mean we can win if we don’t play good cricket. India played well there, which is why they won. We have to do the same; only then will we win. But yes, there is definitely an advantage.”
There is uncertainty regarding Pakistan’s participation in the T20 World Cup. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said on Saturday that participation is subject to approval from the Government of Pakistan. On Sunday, the PCB announced the squad and later in the day Naqvi met the players to reassure them.
As things stand, the World Cup is likely to proceed as per the revised schedule, with the only change being Scotland replacing Bangladesh in Group C.
