Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin has backed Sarfaraz Khan, urging the selectors to give him another chance to represent the national team.
Speaking to Sportstar, Azharuddin said: “He (Sarfaraz) deserves another chance to play for India. He has scored runs everywhere, and India needs good attacking players. If you are scoring runs but you still don’t get a chance, it gets very disappointing. But I’m sure he will get it very soon.”
Sarfaraz made his India debut in a Test match against England in February 2024. Since then, he has played six Tests, scoring 371 runs at an average of 37.10, including one century and three fifties, with a best score of 150. After the home series against New Zealand, he was dropped from the team and has not got another opportunity so far.
However, his recent performances in domestic tournaments across formats have been impressive. The right-handed batter scored 329 runs from seven matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025–26, striking at 203.08 and averaging 65.80.
In the ongoing Ranji Trophy, he has so far scored 405 runs from six matches at an average of 57.85, which includes a match-winning 227 against Hyderabad in the previous game.
“He is a good, attacking player who can change the situation of a game very quickly. He doesn’t like being dominated by the bowler. As a batsman, you need to score runs. If you allow a good bowler to dominate, you are in trouble. I don’t know how the pitch was, but I believe the ball was swinging and the bounce was variable. So for him to score at a good rate underlines his quality,” Azharuddin added.
