Pakistan’s T20I captain Salman Ali Agha.has revealed that he will bat at number three in the upcoming matches, citing his ability to dominate spinners in the Powerplay.
In a move that surprised many, Salman came in at number three ahead of Babar Azam in the first T20I against Australia. The right-handed batter scored a quickfire 39 off 27 balls, an innings laced with four sixes. It proved to be an inspired move, as Australia introduced spin early in the Powerplay, during which Pakistan scored 56 runs. Of the five boundaries Salman hit, four came against spin, along with one six off Cameron Green.
When asked whether he would continue to bat at number three, Salman said: “Yes, I’ll be batting at number three. We expect to face a lot of spin, and I believe I can dominate spin during the Powerplay. That’s why I moved up, and that’s where I’ll stay.”
Salman’s promotion meant Babar, who scored 24, was pushed down to number four. It was only the second time in his career that the former Pakistan captain has batted in that position.
With the World Cup set to be staged in the subcontinent, spin is expected to play a significant role, particularly in Sri Lanka, where the Men in Green are scheduled to play all their matches. However, their participation there remains uncertain as it requires government approval.
Batting at number three could help the Pakistan skipper improve his strike rate. His overall strike rate in T20Is stands at 118, with an average of 24.21.
Pakistan won the first T20I in Lahore by 22 runs to take a 1–0 lead in the three-match series.
