Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian captain and current Director of Cricket at Delhi Capitals, has expressed his backing for the inclusion of Ajinkya Rahane in the Indian Test team for the significant World Test Championship 2023 final. Ganguly has also expressed his faith in Rahane’s ability to capitalize on this opportunity after being recalled to the Test side.
Shreyas Iyer’s back injury created a vacancy in the middle-order, leading to Rahane’s return to the Test team. Despite being dropped from the team in 2022, the right-hander performed well in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy season, scoring 634 runs in seven games at an average of 57.63 while captaining Mumbai.
“I have always liked him. He has always been a good player for India. Opportunities don’t come every day and if he gets the chance to feature in the playing XI during the WTC final, he will make the most of it. So, I wish him all the best,” Sourav Ganguly told PTI.
Ganguly extended his wishes for KL Rahul’s quick recovery after the India batsman was forced out of the WTC Final squad due to a thigh injury sustained in the LSG vs RCB match on Monday.
“It’s unfortunate, I have read that it’s an injury that will keep him out of the IPL as well as the WTC final. Only physios can tell the extent of the injury. Injuries are part of the sport. ‘These boys keep playing all the years, so injuries will happen. So, I wish him a speedy recovery,” the 50-year-old stated.
