Wasim Jaffer, the former Indian opener and Punjab Kings batting coach, believes that Indian players must perform well in the IPL to earn a national call-up, even after proving their worth in domestic cricket. Jaffer cited both Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan as examples.
Shaw, who scored a triple century for Mumbai in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy, only managed 47 runs in six IPL matches and was subsequently dropped from the Delhi Capitals XI. Sarfaraz, one of the most prolific batsmen in domestic cricket, has struggled in the IPL, scoring only 142 runs in 12 innings over the past three seasons.

This season, he has tallied only 53 runs in four innings. Sarfaraz has a staggering record in domestic cricket, with 3,505 runs at an impressive average of 79.65, including 13 hundreds and nine fifties in 37 matches.
“Prithvi (Shaw) has done well, this is the only season where he hasn’t met expectations but he has been a prolific scorer for Delhi along with Warner,” said Jaffer during a pre-match press conference. “But this can happen. In this format, we have seen far bigger players haven’t done well. Hopefully, he will bounce back stronger.

“Sarfaraz (Khan) also had three prolific domestic seasons. To score 1000 runs for almost three seasons is unthinkable but he hasn’t backed that up with IPL performance. Now if you want to come to the Indian side, he’s got to back up the domestic performance with IPL. But unfortunately, he hasn’t done that.”
