As a student of history, I love my artefacts. And a visit to any sports competition isn’t complete without a trip down memory lane. Time-keeping has been at the heart of sport. Careers are often shaped by a millionth of a second. That’s the difference between a gold and a silver, or a medal and finishing fourth. Over the years, we have seen multiple innovations in the domain, and witnessed how the timekeeping process for example changed over time to make sure that no athlete was or is at a disadvantage.
Athletes too have often showcased watches as signature memorabilia. They have flaunted them, worn them to showcase artistry of a very different level, and finally used them to mark a signature style. In sum, watches and the craft behind curating each timepiece has inspired generations.
It is with this idea that we decided to partner with Titan, India’s home-grown global watch brand, to make the Trailblazers conclave special. We decided to co-create a limited edition watch that will soon become the signature of the conclave. And that’s when the idea dawned on us. Why not celebrate an award with a signature limited-edition watch? For example, we will be honouring Pullela Gopichand and PR Sreejesh with our lifetime achievement award. Both are exemplary athletes and have created legacies which will outlive each one of us. While Gopi is the Dronacharya, Sreejesh is one of the greatest to have played his sport.
I am delighted to say that Titan has worked on these pieces for months, and have come up with something which will stand the test of time. The hands in Gopi’s watch resemble a badminton shuttlecock, while in Sreejesh’s case, they turn into a hockey stick. In all honesty, I was amazed with the attention to detail in creating each of these pieces. And needless to say, these watches, which will all be displayed as a special installation at the conclave, will be a major attraction for anyone attending.
