Even as speculation continued to swirl in India over whether two of the game’s legends will be part of the country’s World Cup plans in 2027, one of them hit the nets thousands of miles away. Earlier this week, Virat Kohli had an intense two-hour session in the indoor nets at Lord’s in London.

As of now, there is no clarity on whether Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be asked to play against Australia A on home turf before the white-ball tour of Australia in October-November. But regardless of whether he plays those matches or not, Kohli has started his preparations for what will undoubtedly be a challenging assignment on early-season pitches Down Under.

He practised at full throttle against pace and spin, and different angles, and those that watched the session were struck by how seriously he approached it. Some of his preparation has also been watched over by Naeem Amin, assistant coach of the Gujarat Titans franchise in the IPL. Kohli himself had documented that on his Instagram page.

In the latter stages of his career, Kohli has rarely practised for the sake of it. Each session is usually tailored towards learning new skills or fine-tuning existing strengths.

Kohli retired from T20Is after the World Cup win in 2024, and played the last of his 123 Tests for India in Sydney earlier this year. His immediate international future has only those three ODIs in Australia, with a further three games pencilled in against South Africa before the end of the year.
