Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed bowled a brilliant spell that helped Pakistan dismiss South Africa for just 143 runs in the third ODI at Faisalabad on 8 November. The leg-spinner took four crucial wickets, conceding only 27 runs at an economy rate of 2.70, registering his best bowling figures in ODIs.
After opting to bat first, South Africa started well as Lhuan-dre Pretorius (39) and Quinton de Kock (53) added 72 runs for the opening partnership. Both openers looked set and comfortable, but once Salman Ali Agha dismissed Pretorius, the course of the game changed.
Abrar then dismissed debutant Rubin Hermann (1), Donovan Ferreira (7), Corbin Bosch (0), and captain Matthew Breetzke (16) to complete his four-wicket haul. His spell completely destroyed South Africa’s middle order. This was his second four-wicket haul in ODIs, the previous one coming against Zimbabwe in Harare. He has now taken 25 ODI wickets in just 13 matches.
After reaching his half-century and surpassing 7,000 ODI runs, De Kock lost his wicket to Mohammad Nawaz, which triggered a dramatic collapse. From 106 for three, South Africa lost their remaining seven wickets for just 37 runs.
Abrar was well supported by captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, Salman Ali Agha, and Mohammad Nawaz, who each took two wickets. South Africa were bowled out in just 37.5 overs, posting an easy target of 144 runs for Pakistan to chase.
