Afghanistan are likely to host Bangladesh for a three-match T20I series in the UAE later this year in October. The exact dates are yet to be confirmed, but ESPNcricinfo has learned that the series could be scheduled after the Asia Cup in September and before the third week of October, when Bangladesh are set to face the West Indies.
If the series goes ahead, it would complete the second half of what was initially planned as a full-format tour in July 2024, which was to include two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is. However, the tour was later reduced to only white-ball fixtures. The rescheduled matches in Greater Noida were subsequently postponed due to adverse weather conditions and Bangladesh’s congested calendar.
Afghanistan claimed the ODI series 2–1 in November 2024, winning the three-match leg against Bangladesh.
This T20I series would mark the first meeting between the two sides in the format since Afghanistan’s historic win over Bangladesh at the 2024 T20 World Cup in Kingstown, which secured them a place in the semi-finals for the first time.
According to reports, discussions are ongoing between the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) regarding the rescheduling of the two Test matches, which may now take place next year.
If the T20I series is approved, it will serve as vital preparation for both teams ahead of the next T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka in 2026.
For Afghanistan, the series would also help bridge a gap in their calendar between the Asia Cup and a full tour of Zimbabwe at the end of October. Following that, they are expected to play three T20Is each against the West Indies and New Zealand as part of their build-up to the T20 World Cup.
