Afghanistan batter Ibrahim Zadran has been fined 15% of his match fee and handed a demerit point by the ICC for breaching the code of conduct during the third ODI against Bangladesh in Abu Dhabi on 14 October.
After being dismissed for 95 in the 37th over of Afghanistan’s innings, Ibrahim struck a piece of equipment near the dressing room with his bat in frustration. As a result, he has been given a demerit point and a deduction in match fees.
Ibrahim was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match”.
There was no need for a formal hearing, as the charges proposed by match referee Graeme Labrooy were accepted by the player.
This was Ibrahim’s first offence in a 24-month period. As per the rules, when a player accumulates four or more demerit points within two years, they are converted into suspension points, resulting in a ban. Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is – whichever comes first for the player.
The Afghanistan opener was at his absolute best against Bangladesh in the recently concluded ODI series, scoring a total of 213 runs across the three matches. After scoring 23 in the first game, he made 95 in each of the next two, narrowly missing out on centuries on both occasions. Afghanistan won the series 3–0, marking their fifth consecutive ODI series victory.
